Lombok is an Indonesian Island to the East of Bali. But i’s nowhere near as popular as Bali, making it full of isolated beaches, untouched areas and incredible nature! (…although there was a lot of construction underway, so it seems things may be changing). We recently spent six amazing weeks travelling Lombok and Bali – here are my top 5 things you can’t miss on Lombok!
1. Relax on the Beaches of Kuta Lombok
The South of Lombok has some of the most stunning beaches we’ve been to so far, with white sand and the most incredible turquoise water. They are completely untouched, with only a few locals selling fresh fruit, sarongs and of course Bintang (the local beer!). We were lucky enough to be taught how to cut a pineapple by a local boy named Andre, (such a hustler!) It really is paradise and an amazing place to relax. We stayed in Kuta in Hadiqa Villas, and explored the area on a scooter, stopping along the coast whenever we wanted. The beaches you can’t miss are: Mawun Beach, Mawi Beach and Tanjung Aan…
2. Climb Mount Rinjani
Mount Rinjani is in the North of Lombok and is the second highest volcano of Indonesia. We booked a three day, 2 night hike with John’s Adventures and I couldn’t recommend it more. It was one of the most challenging but incredible experiences I’ve ever had – I’ll explain more in a future post, but for now here are my highlights in photos!
Camping on the Crater Rim
Mt Barujari in Crater Lake
View from ALMOST the Summit!
3. Enjoy the Senggigi Sunset
Senggigi is the most popular tourist spot on the island of Lombok and it’s full of nice hotels, restaurants and beaches. We stayed in Semilir Senggigi Inn, a homestay which had the best breakfasts and lovely staff. The sunsets from Senggigi beach are beautiful and there are lots of amazing places to enjoy dinner on the beach as the sun goes down…
4. Island Hop the Gilis
Gili Meno, Gili Air and Gili T make up the 3 Gili Islands and they are simply paradise! They can be reached from Lombok in under 20 minutes, and can also be reached from Bali – although this takes A LOT longer. The 3 islands are really different from each other but are all 100% worth a visit, (I’ll explain more about our time on the Gili’s in a future post!), but in a nutshell…
- Deserted beaches
- Not much going on – heaven for relaxing!
- Amazing Scuba diving (Highly recommend Scallywags!)
- Backpackers everywhere!
- Bars, parties, nightlife
- Perfect balance of peacefulness and partying!
- My favourite 🙂
5. Take the Lombok to Flores Boat Trip
Our final stop in Lombok was to take a three day boat trip from Lombok to the island of Flores. We booked our 3 day, 2 night trip with Kencana Adventures – they are different accommodation options from sleeping on deck to having a private room. The trip was a great way to see more of the incredible islands of Indonesia, and we stopped at lots of interesting spots on the way. We spent a lot of time on the boat itself too – it was great to meet other people travelling and there’s something so relaxing about being on water! (Except at night… when it’s pitch black and the boat is rocking like mad!) My favourite of our stops were…
Snorkelling at Pink Beach
Komodo Dragons on Komodo Island
View From Keppel Island
This was just a quick post about my highlights of Lombok – there are more detailed posts to come. You might like to check out my 5 Places You Can’t Miss in Bali! If you have any questions or comments, let me know!
